Abstract:

This paper presents design and construction aspects and general bridge conception of Long Span Steel Arch Bridges using example and model of 2 Steel Arch Bridges:

  1. Dawki Bridge across river Umngot, Meghalaya- Span 125 m. The arch has been designed as steel Box with semi through deck

  2. Tharia Bridge over river Wahrew, Meghalaya- Span 150 m. The arch has been designed as steel trussed arch with semi through deck.

The structures are chosen such that these complements the existing landscape. Aesthetics has been intrinsic in the design in which simple form & slender structure has been adopted to provide aesthetically pleasing design. The bridges should stand as proud inheritor of Indian tradition of bridge design and building.
